Deepfake Media Scams

Deepfake Imposter Scams - Media that has been created or altered by AI to trick people into trusting them, resulting in stealing money.

The Rising Tide of Deepfakes

With the growing influence of artificial intelligence, impostor scams are becoming more frequent. Fraudsters are leveraging deepfakes. These manipulated images, videos, or audio clips can feature anyone you know, from friends and family members to public personalities, such as celebrities, politicians, or law‑enforcement officials.

Red Flags

  • Unanticipated demands for funds, login credentials, personal data, or instructions to keep things confidential.
  • Use of emotional pressure, such as inducing fear or a sense of emergency to compel action.
  • Communication that feels out of character, especially when it comes from someone you know via text, phone, or video call.

Look for inconsistencies like...

Check whether any parts of the face look smeared or oddly pixelated.

Notice if the subject blinks too often or not at all. Consistent eye movement is usually a good sign.

Look for realistic textures and natural shading on hair and for teeth that match the mouth’s shape and motion.

Verify that mouth movements align precisely with the spoken words. Any lag or mismatch raises suspicion.

A flat, robotic, or otherwise unnatural tone can indicate synthetic speech.

Watch for lighting that doesn’t match the scene or shadows that seem out of place or unnaturally harsh.

Tips to Stay Safe

Stop and Think... Is someone trying to scare you or pressure you into sending money or sharing personal information?

Verify the legitimacy of people and requests by using trusted numbers, official websites and online reverse image/video search tools.

Create codewords or phrases with loved ones to confirm identities.

Limit your digital footprint. Photos, voice clips and videos can be used to train deepfake models.

Never repost videos or images without verifying the source.

Report Scams

  • Local police
  • FBI at IC3.gov
  • Financial Institution if your sent money

Deepfake scams are a daily reality that evolve with every new AI advancement. Keep your digital defenses like strong passwords, two‑factor authentication, and regular account reviews up to date. Stay cautious... the line between real and fabricated is getting thinner every day.
